It is estimated that almost 1 in 5 people in the UK suffer from an allergy. From 1 October 2021, Natasha’s Law is coming into effect in Wales, England, and Northern Ireland, which requires prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) food to provide potentially life-saving allergen information on the packaging. The label needs to show the name of the food and the ingredients list with the 14 allergens required to be declared by law emphasized within it.
This will benefit people with food allergies or intolerances to have more confidence in consuming prepacked foods and to make more informed choices.
Other existing labelling requirements for food businesses such as the front and back of pack food nutrition labels are continuing to be crucial to help shape the move to healthier and sustainable food choices.
Food Databanks National Capability (FDNC), based at Quadram Institute Bioscience in Norwich (UK) provides labelling datasets that will help food manufacturers, dietitians, nutritionists, software and app producers create the nutrition information for food products and recipes. https://fnnbri.quadram.ac.uk/labelling/
We also provide a service to calculate the nutritional content of food products for the UK food industry to satisfy the needs of food producers who need reliable and accurate nutritional information for labelling their products.

“This new labelling law will provide consumers with enough information regarding allergens in order to make the right decisions when buying prepacked foods. It will help to build trust in the consumer and will make life easier and safer for all people dealing with food allergies”. Daniela Segovia Lizano Research Scientist at QIB
